Six mistakes that cost people their deposit

  • Cleaning around furniture and boxes, then finding the marks underneath on walkthrough day with no time to fix them.
  • Skipping the oven interior because the unit has a self-clean cycle. That leaves ash and a burned smell, and managers still check the racks and door glass.
  • Shampooing the carpets first, then cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms over the top of them.
  • Forgetting the spaces that are not rooms: the storage cage, the garage shelf, the mudroom bench, the mailbox and the balcony floor.
  • Leaving trash bags, a broom or half a bottle of cleaner by the door. Anything left behind can be billed as a removal charge.
  • Taking no photos. Shoot every room after the clean, timestamped, before you hand over the keys.

Questions, answered

What is included in a move out cleaning?

A move-out clean covers the whole unit with the furniture gone, including oven and fridge interiors, inside every cabinet and drawer, baseboards, window tracks and sills, blinds, light fixtures, vents, closet shelves and all floors. Bathrooms get grout, glass tracks, the toilet base and the exhaust vent. It goes further than a regular visit because a landlord opens things a weekly cleaner never touches.

What do you need to clean when you move out?

Work room by room and finish with the spaces that are not rooms: the mudroom, garage, storage cage, balcony and mailbox. Inside the unit, the items that trigger deductions most often are the oven, the fridge seals, window tracks, blind slats, baseboards and the tops of door frames. In Anchorage, add the entryway floor and threshold, where winter salt and sand collect.

How many hours does a move out clean take?

A small one-bedroom condo usually runs three to five hours with one or two cleaners, and a three or four-bedroom house commonly takes six to ten. Heavy oven buildup, pet hair or years without a deep clean push it longer. We look at square footage, bathroom count and condition before quoting so the crew arrives with enough time booked.

Do people deep clean their carpets when they move out?

Many Anchorage leases require professional carpet cleaning with a receipt, so check your lease before you decide. We do not shampoo carpets, and we refer that work to carpet crews we trust. Schedule them after the house cleaning is finished, so the carpet is the last thing touched and has a day to dry before your walkthrough.

What cleaning supplies do I need when moving out?

At minimum: a degreaser for the kitchen, a bathroom cleaner that handles hard water, glass cleaner, microfiber cloths, a scrub brush and an old toothbrush for window tracks and grout, a vacuum with a hose attachment, a mop and a step stool for light fixtures and door tops. Keep one bag for trash and take it with you, since anything left behind can be billed. If you hire us, we bring everything, and our products are pet-safe and family-safe.
